Voter Information Tool

The Voting Information Project, a project of The Pew Charitable Trusts, is a partnership with the states and Google to ensure that U.S. voters have the information they need, such as where to vote and what’s on their ballots.

Pew Charitable Trusts tasked Incubeta Joystick with creating an easily embeddable, mobile-optimized, and white-label voting information tool that offers official voting information–such as polling place and ballot information–to anyone using just a residential address. This tool can be easily embedded on any website and supports multiple languages.

The Voter Information Tools makes use of Google’s Civic Information API and Google’s Maps API. Through user research and UX design sprints, Joystick created a optimized experience of mobile that allows user to easy access to information available in from the API, no matter what device or site they may be viewing from. There is an additional option to customize the widget using a configuration tool that walks users through the process of adding a branded theme.

In 2014, the offices of the California and Iowa secretaries of state, the New Jersey Division of Elections, and the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk embedded the tool. During March, VIP provided information for 14 presidential primaries, four statewide primaries, and multiple local elections. Throughout 2016, VIP plans to support 80 elections, including presidential primaries in 31 states.
